In the Studio and Work Process

My central aim as an artist is to discover a vivid, expressive archetype and bring its character to life through facial expression, visual imagery, and sculptural form. Each work emerges as a distinctive and recognizable character, possessing a strong individuality and inhabiting a world of its own. As an artist, I am deeply fascinated by the characters and images I create. My creative process grows from an affection for a particular era, a particular moment in time, and from my desire to interpret that world through a poetic and imaginative lens.

As I began to understand how profoundly painting could help reveal the personality and emotional presence of a sculptural figure, I developed my own approach, which I call Sculptural Painting. By bringing sculpture and painting together, I am able to develop a character more fully and express the original idea behind each work with greater depth.

An important part of this process is research. I find great inspiration in studying the clothing, hairstyles, fashion, and visual language of a particular period—the historical world to which I connect each sculpture. These details allow me not simply to reference an era, but to evoke its atmosphere and bring the character closer to life. I do not think of my sculptures as being merely painted. I approach their surfaces as a painter approaches a canvas, using color, tone, texture, light, and detail to shape personality, mood, and expression.

My work therefore exists at the intersection of painting and sculpture. The two disciplines become inseparable, working together to reveal and emphasize the character, atmosphere, and poetic image at the heart of each piece. As works of Sculptural Painting, these pieces also have a strong relationship with the interior spaces they inhabit. They become expressive elements within an environment—works of art that bring character, visual presence, and a sense of life to a space.
